EPMode, version 1.0.
An setup program for printers with an Epson mode.
Copyright 1994 by Stan Peters
Box 2028
Fairfield, IA. 52556
I started this program many years ago because I couldn't find a
program to set TABS every four positions on my printer. I still
haven't found such a program. Printers have gotten a lot smarter
since then, printer control panels and setup programs haven't kept
pace. Epmode has 26 options in an easy to use way. If you forgot
the options, enter 'epmode' at the DOS prompt, and you will get a
one screen help summary.
Most printers accept, as a default, those commands used for Epson
printers. This includes lasers, such as the Hewlett Packard
printers. So if you are using your printer in the default power on
mode, this program is for you. Of course, to get the most out of
your printer, use Windows or a word processer (Word Perfect, or
etc.). This program was written for a Panasonic 1180 in Epson
FX-86e mode. The same commands should work on most Epson
compatible printers, although some, such as font selection, may
operate a little differently.
This program is free to all users. The intent is to create
interest in the author's sample disk (see below). Any
redistribution of this program must include texrep.doc (and,
hopefully, the file_id.diz). Shareware Vendors and others may
charge a distribution fee.
USING THE PROGRAM:
At the DOS prompt, simply enter the program name followed by the
options of your choice. Since there are 26 options, you may want
some help, so enter the 'epmode' alone, and you will get a help
screen. Then enter the epmode with the options of your choice and
press enter. For example:
epmode c96 t4 n a
selects elite letter quality, tabs every 4 spaces, print box
characters as shown on the screen.

OPTIONS
One type of option uses a letter followed by a number:
Cnn - where nn is 40, 48, 68, 80, 96, 120, 137, or 160
This assumes 8 inch paper in a standard printer.
You will get 65% more characters if you have wide paper.
Ln - Lines per inch, 1 to 9. Normal spacing is 6 lines/inch,
so enter 'L3' to get double spacing.
Mnn - Set left margin, 1 to 78. You can start in other than
column 1. For a more finished look to plain text, enter:
epmode c96 m8 n
to use Elite starting in column 8, letter quality. It prints
20% faster too.
Tnn - Set tab size, 1 to 21.
Fnn - Set form length, 1 to 127 lines. The norm is 66 lines
at 6 lines per inch. If you are printing 8 lines to the
inch, use f88.
Pnn - Set skip over perf (at bottom of form), 1 to 60 lines.
Epson compatibles will space over the perforation at the
bottom of the page if you set this option. P6 would skip
six lines, printing 60 lines on each sheet.
Nn - Set Letter quality printing, 1-Sans Serif, 2-Prestige,
3-Bold, none-Courier. (On a Panasonic 1180).
The font selection may differ on other printers. You may
have to do a reset (r option) for these to take effect.
A - Alternate Graphics, (eg: Boxes)
The alternate graphic character set prints box framing
characters properly - what's on the screen, prints!
P - Set proportional spacing
D - Set to Double Strike
E - Set to Emphasized
H - Set double high characters
I - Set to Italics
R - Reset printer to power on status
Gx - Generic - where x (1 to 5 chars) is anything to follow ESC
O - Turn paper-out sensor off
For printing near the bottom of the last sheet of paper.
S - Set to slow speed
Quiets some printers.
SAMPLING THE AUTHOR'S WORK.
The shareware concept is a very good deal for the user, but the
authors rarely receive compensation and distribution of programs is
rather hit-or-miss. So I am offering a sampler, with the following
programs for $9.95 shipped. The $9.95 can be applied, in full,
towards registration of the shareware programs (MaxFind at $21 and
Disk Navigator at $25). I welcome suggestions.
MaxFind v.3.2. Multi-word/line/block text search. You can search
for up to 15 words at one time, using and/or/not logic, with a
"fuzzy" spelling option. Scope can be one or more lines or a
block. The block can be defined in three ways, allowing searches
tailored for:
- BBS file lists,
- E-mail, FAQs, The BIBLE ...
PC Magazine raved about v.1, now twice as fast, color output, etc.
300K/sec. on a 386/40. Using batch files you get answers before
most programs load. With a 15 page manual on disk and examples.

Disk Navigator - a shareware DOS directory shell:
- It has excellent, easily customized point and shoot macros,
e.g., collect tagged files into a zip file with one keystroke.
- Accepts command line arguments at program startup,
including *a*f*n* type wildcards. Also select a set
of directories you want shown together. This makes it a
very capable "whereis" program.
- It can produce a [@]filename file acceptable to MaxFind
from a set of tagged files.
- Registration is $19 plus $6 s&h. $30 will get you a disk and
registration of MaxFind and Disk Navigator.
- A 29 page manual on disk and examples.
Texrep - This is a freeware text search and replace for files with
a simple DOS command line syntax, for example:
texrep -w old:new Stan:STANLEY Peters:PETERS myfile.doc
will make my name upper case and change 'old' to 'new' with
"myfile.do0" as output. To enter odd characters, use the
numeric equivalent. To remove ctrl-z and CR, enter:
texrep \26: \13\10:\10 myfile
The program will display an numeric/ASCII conversion table on
request.
Little Directory - Another freeware program. A directory program ala
DOS's DIR. This one has 12 options (1 to 5 columns, walk the
subdirectory tree, ...) and you can set the default style with
an environment variable. Options include a tree display
showing the size of each directory.
Epmode - This is a freeware printer setup program. My Panasonic is
Epson compatible and about as easy to program as a VCR.
Epmode has 26 options in an easy to use way. Most
printers (including lasers) accept these. My autoexec
has this line:
epmode r t4 c96 a
This resets the printer, sets tabs every 4, selects
draft elite and the alternate graphic characters so that
boxes on the screen print as boxes.
